What is the difference between
the duty classifications of coiled spring pins?
Coiled spring pins, according to prevailing industry specification
ASME B18.8.2-2000, come in three (3) duty classifications. They
are: 1. Standard Duty (sometimes referred to as Medium Duty) 2.
Heavy Duty 3. Light Duty. The most commonly used are Standard Duty
and Heavy Duty. As their names imply, there is a difference in their
relative strength and application. The Standard Duty pin covers
a very wide variety of applications. Standard Duty pins offer excellent
flexibility and high strength and are often used as the preferred
pin in applications ranging from hinge pins to load bearing components
of an industrial assembly. Heavy Duty pins are typically designed
in when superior shear strength is desired and when there are elevated
stress and loading factors involved. It is almost impossible, and
inaccurate, to tell the difference by sight. While each diameter
in each classification does have a different material thickness,
this cannot be judged accurately on a visual basis. The Double Shear
value is one of the guiding criteria for differentiating duty classifications.
When comparing similar diameters, Light Duty pins have the lowest
Double Shear values; Standard Duty pins have greater Double Shear
values than Light Duty, but less than Heavy Duty, and Heavy Duty
pins have the greatest Double Shear values. The other measurable
difference is in the Pin Diameter - Maximum/Minimum range. Each
duty classification/diameter has its own Maximum/Minimum range.
Chamfer Diameter & Length and Recommended Hole Size are the
same for each diameter, regardless of duty classification. In general,
Standard and Light Duty pins require less force to insert. In addition,
they impart less radial tension in the application. This may be
something to consider when the hole is in soft or thin material
or very near the edge of the application. The double shear values
of Heavy Duty pins meet or exceed the Double Shear of similar diameter
slotted spring pins. VOGELSANG manufactures common sizes in Standard
and Heavy Duty classifications for stock availability. Due to the
lack of demand for Light Duty pins, they are quoted upon request.
Coiled pins further increase the range of options for non-threaded
tension fastening by way of these classifications.
